AI-Generated Designs: What Works for Printing and Embroidery.

Posted  Jun, Fri, 2026

Artificial Intelligence has made it easier than ever to create logos, graphics, and custom artwork. Every day, we receive designs generated with tools like ChatGPT, Midjourney, DALL·E, Canva AI, Adobe Firefly, and many others.

While AI is an incredible creative tool, there is one important thing many people don’t realize:

Not every AI-generated design is ready for printing or embroidery.

In fact, most AI-generated files we receive require significant adjustments before they can be used for custom apparel production.

The Most Common Issues We See

1. Images instead of Vector Files

This is by far the most common problem.

Most AI tools export artwork as PNG, JPG, or WEBP images. While these files may look great on your screen, they are not ideal for professional printing.

For the best results, logos and artwork should be supplied as vector files such as:

  • AI (Adobe Illustrator)
  • EPS
  • SVG
  • PDF (vector-based)

Vector files can be resized without losing quality and allow us to make production-ready adjustments when necessary.

2. Low Resolution Artwork

Many AI-generated images look sharp online but are actually low-resolution files.

When enlarged for printing, they can become blurry, pixelated, or lose important details.

For apparel decoration, high-resolution artwork is essential to ensure clean and professional results.

3. Backgrounds That Cannot Be Removed Easily

A common issue occurs when logos are generated with colored, textured, or complex backgrounds.

While the design may appear clean visually, removing the background can be challenging and time-consuming.

Whenever possible, provide artwork with:

  • Transparent backgrounds
  • Isolated logos
  • Separate graphic elements

This helps ensure a cleaner final print.

4. Gradients Don’t Always Convert Properly

AI-generated artwork often relies heavily on gradients and blended colors.

The challenge is that when artwork needs to be vectorized, gradients do not always translate accurately. What appears to be a smooth color transition can become blocks of solid colors during the conversion process.

For screen printing and embroidery especially, simpler color transitions generally produce better results.

5. Transparency Effects Can Cause Problems

Many AI-generated designs include transparency effects, shadows, glows, and opacity changes.

Unfortunately, not all decoration methods interpret transparency correctly.

For example:

  • Embroidery cannot reproduce transparency.
  • Some print workflows may require artwork adjustments before production.

Designs with solid colors typically produce more predictable results.

6. Too Many Colors and Small Details

AI loves detail.

Printing and embroidery do not.

Many AI-generated graphics contain:

  • Hundreds of color variations
  • Tiny decorative elements
  • Ultra-fine lines
  • Complex textures

These details may look impressive on a computer screen but often become difficult to reproduce accurately on fabric.

Simpler artwork generally produces cleaner and more durable results.

7. Not Everything Can Be Vectorized

One of the biggest misconceptions is that any image can simply be converted into a vector.

While vectorization tools exist, they are not magic.

Images that resemble photographs, paintings, or highly detailed AI artwork often cannot be converted into clean vectors without losing quality or changing the original appearance.

The more complex the image, the less accurate the vector conversion tends to be.

8. Not Every AI Design Can Be Embroidered

Embroidery has its own set of limitations.

Details that look great in an AI-generated image may be impossible to reproduce with thread.

Common embroidery challenges include:

  • Extremely small text
  • Thin lines
  • Tiny details
  • Gradients
  • Transparency effects
  • Photographic images

When designing for embroidery, simplicity is usually the key to achieving the best result.

How to Create AI Artwork That Prints Better

If you’re using AI to create artwork for apparel, we recommend:

✓ Use simple shapes and clean lines
✓ Limit the number of colors
✓ Avoid photo-realistic artwork when possible
✓ Request transparent backgrounds
✓ Design with embroidery limitations in mind if embroidery is your final goal
✓ Export the highest resolution available
✓ Provide vector files whenever possible
