DTF Printing Explained: How Direct-to-Film Works and When to Use It

DTF printing — short for Direct-to-Film — has rapidly become one of the most versatile custom apparel methods available. At ThreadCo Print Shop in Vancouver, we use DTF to print on fabrics that traditional methods can't handle, and to produce detailed multi-color designs without minimum order quantities. Here's everything you need to know about DTF printing.

What Is DTF Printing?

DTF (Direct-to-Film) is a transfer printing method where your design is printed onto a special PET film using water-based pigment inks, coated with a hot-melt adhesive powder, cured, then heat-pressed onto the final garment. The result is a vibrant, durable print with a soft hand-feel that works on almost any fabric.

How the DTF Process Works

  1. Print: Your artwork is printed in CMYK + white onto the PET film
  2. Powder: Hot-melt adhesive powder is applied to the wet ink
  3. Cure: The film passes through a curing oven to bond the adhesive
  4. Press: The film is heat-pressed onto the garment at high temperature
  5. Peel: The carrier film is removed, leaving the design on the fabric

DTF Printing Advantages

  • Works on cotton, polyester, blends, nylon, leather, denim, and more
  • No minimum order — print 1 piece or 1,000
  • Full CMYK color with photographic detail
  • No screen setup or color-separation costs
  • Soft hand-feel, not stiff like older transfers
  • Excellent wash durability (50+ washes when properly cured)

When to Choose DTF Over Screen Printing

  • Small batch orders (under 24 pieces)
  • Designs with many colors or fine detail
  • Mixed garment types in one order (different fabrics, sizes, styles)
  • Photo-realistic artwork or gradients
  • Tight deadlines — DTF has the fastest turnaround

When to Choose Screen Printing Instead

  • Bulk orders over 24 pieces with simple designs
  • Lowest cost-per-piece at scale
  • Vintage or distressed print effects
  • Specialty inks (puff, metallic, glow-in-the-dark, discharge)

DTF vs DTG: What's the Difference?

DTG (Direct-to-Garment) prints water-based ink directly into the fabric fibers, which works well for cotton but struggles with polyester and dark synthetic garments. DTF works on any fabric and gives more vibrant whites because the ink sits on top of an adhesive layer. For dark-colored polyester or blends, DTF is almost always the better choice.

Care Instructions for DTF Prints

  • Wash inside-out in cold water
  • Tumble dry low or hang dry
  • Don't iron directly on the print
  • Skip bleach and harsh detergents
